How to design worksheets?

Supplementation: designing worksheets

    Today’s most modern coursebooks usually claim that they have full coverage for learners’ needs. However, in previous chapters, we have read that it is not possible for a single coursebook to meet a learner’s needs. That is why many teachers have the urge to provide additional materials because the more learners are exposed to the language the more they are likely to learn the language knowledge.So, teachers have to find the almost “perfect” book for their students.

    The first thing to do while choosing a coursebook for learners is to identify the gaps in that coursebook. The best way to identify the gaps is to have a checklist that includes questions like:

  1. Is it what your students need?
  2. Is it clearly presented?
  3. Is there enough grammar, vocabulary, or pronunciation work?

    After doing the checklist, how can teachers improve the materials? With supplementation of course. We can supplement a coursebook in one of two ways:

  1.           By utilizing items, such as exercises, text, or activities, from another published source: a coursebook, a supplementary skills book, a book of practice exercises, or a teacher’s resource book;
  2.       By devising our own material; this may include the exploitation of authentic visual or textual items.

 The Process of Supplementary Materials Design: Syllabus Driven or Concept Driven

    Based on the learners’ needs or syllabus, you may need some extra materials. If you need materials, especially for your own syllabus, it is called syllabus-driven. However, if you see the linguistic potential but you have no class in the mind, these materials are called concept-driven. When we plan our materials, the first thing we should do is identify the needs and if the need is knowledge then teachers will reflect on what they know. On the other hand, if the need is for skill, then they may skip that part. After doing that we focus on the method and how learning can be facilitated.
